In the 1970s, prominent Victorians such as Mr Wong Hung Khim, Mr Foo Kok Swee, and Mr Ong Teong Pin were discussing the idea of a new junior college in Victoria. On May 14, 1970, National Junior College became the country’s first national junior college. Officially opened by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, National Junior College was Singapore’s first collegiate and served as the prototype for subsequent junior colleges.

ACS Family of Schools member Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) is one of the seven educational institutions in the ACS Family of Schools. The Methodist missionary, William Fitzjames Oldham, established the Anglo-Chinese School. William Oldham arrived in Singapore with other Methodist missionaries on February 7, 1885. Through a Chinese member of the Methodist Church, Reverend Oldham was invited to the Celestial Reasoning Association. Mr. Tan Keong Saik founded the organization and intended it to help people learn English better. Reverend Oldham was offered the opportunity to give a lecture on astronomy. Reverend Oldham’s performance as a speaker so inspired the company executives that they eventually invited him to be their language tutor.
The Anglo-Chinese School was founded in March 1886 with funding from Association members after Reverend Oldham began the institution at 70 Amoy Street. The first batch of pupils were 13 Chinese boys, all of whom were the sons of businessmen who had attended Reverend Oldham’s speech.
The school relocated to larger premises in Coleman Street in November 1886, after eight months. From 1928, the higher standards of the institution were transferred to Cairnhill Road and remained there for ten years. The ACS Secondary School, which was previously on Queen Street, moved to Barker Road in 1950 and began admitting girls into the new Post-School Certificate Classes for the first time.

The Anglo-Chinese Schools, as we know it today, began with a Providential invitation to Methodist Reverend William Fitzjames Oldham to establish a mission in Southeast Asia. At the time, there were few educational opportunities for the many children in Singapore’s city-port. Oldham’s goal was to give his young charges a decent education.
On March 1, 1886, he established Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) to educate young people “for God and humanity” so that they may serve society. The school began with 13 children of Chinese merchants learning English and Chinese. Its high level of education was gradually recognized by the community. Enrolment in the school increased rapidly, and additional classroom space became necessary, prompting the institution to relocate to a purpose-built schoolhouse at Coleman Street.

St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) is a Catholic secondary school for boys founded in 1852 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools or De La Salle Brothers. It is Singapore’s third-oldest secondary institution.

St Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) is the oldest junior college in Singapore, having been established in 1862 by the Anglican Diocese of Singapore. SAJC is a mission school that was founded as a dream of faith by the Anglican Church in Singapore in response to national educational trends in the 1970s. Dunman High School (DHS) (previously known as Dunman Government Chinese Middle School) is an autonomous co-educational secondary school in Singapore that offers the Integrated Programme. It has consistently ranked at the top among co-educational institutions in Singapore for academic success.
Dunman High School was chosen to be one of the nine Special Assistance Plan (SAP) secondary schools in 1979. The school was renamed “Dunman High School,” and it began to offer English as well as Chinese language education at the primary level. In 1982, when the Music Elective Programme (MEP) was launched by the MOE, DHS was selected to implement the programme for musically gifted students.
Since 2005, the school has used a customized version of the Integrated Program called the Dunman High Programme (DHP) to enable all students to bypass O-Level examinations and enter directly into the A-Level study.

Singapore’s Millennia Institute (MI), now the country’s only Centralised Institute, was formed in 2004 as a result of the combination of Jurong Institute (JI) and Outram Institute (OI).
TMI has a well-paced GCE ‘A’ Level program that is notable for its primarily classroom-based learning and close contact between teachers and students. The average class size is 26 in the second and third years of study. MI is the only institution to provide the Business stream for ‘A’ Level students, which includes topics like Principles of Accounting and Management of Business.
