The NeueChair is a no-brainer if you’re looking to eliminate the home office chair scourge, providing top-notch build quality, quality materials, useful and adjustable design, and an inexpensive price tag. This chair is gorgeous, but it’s also comfortable and made for the long haul — with grippy pleather armrests, an aluminium metal frame, and a breathable mesh backrest. You can adjust pretty much anything you need to — arm height and angle, lumbar support, backrest tilt, etc. — with fully accessible controls.

6. Steelcase Series 2

(Credit: Steelcase)
Key FeaturesVastly customisable
Affordable for an ergonomic chair
Comfortable and breathable
Where to Buyhttps://au.steelcase.com/products/series-2?variant=40339636879513
Price$718.00

Steelcase’s Series 2 is a good ‘starter’ ergonomic task chair, cool where it counts and with a handful of extra bells and whistles for you, so you don’t have to pay more for things you will never use. The back of the chair is made of a mesh material, that’s cool, comfortable, supportive and cushions well. It’s especially good living in Australia where the climate is hot and humid, the cool mesh material makes you feel good. You can also adjust how far forward in relationship to the seat your back feels like it should be by manipulating a lever. You can also make the chair higher and lower by using another lever. The adjustable lumbar support, which I’ll describe in more depth below, is a consideration to make the seat even more bearable.

7. Humanscale Freedom

Key FeaturesNo complex controls to worry about
Dynamically adjusts to the user
Effortless Recline
Where to Buyhttps://www.humanscale.com/products/seating/freedom-task-office-chair
Price $1099.00

Humanscale makes some of the most impressive high-end ergonomic office furniture, and the Freedom is probably the neatest office chair they do. The Freedom is nifty, of course, but it’s also beautiful. And it has a neat little secret. There’s no need to fumble around the levers and knobs of the Freedom Chair; it does your adjusting for you. Unlike most ergonomic measures, it has no dials or levers to make you guess at what the right setting might be.

8. Secretlab Titan Evo 2022

(Credit: SecretLab)
(Credit: SecretLab)
Key FeaturesSturdiness and high-end materials
Adjustable lumbar
Suitable for persons with a larger stature
Where to Buyhttps://secretlab.sg/products/titan-evo-2022-series
Price $619

Although, for the most part, all the other thrones in this class are a little too flamboyant to be seen in the office, this does not hold as strong when you are at home. The most distinguishable feature between the two chairs is their colouring, which is quite different: for instance, the default colour scheme of the 2022 Titan Evo is rather subdued, with very little branding and less prominent fittings and trimmings, but there is a lot of space for personalising if that is what you are aiming for.

9. Noblechairs Epic Real Leather

(Credit: Noblechairs)
(Credit: Noblechairs)
Key FeaturesPrecious genuine leather cover
Premium design
High-precision manufacturing
Where to Buyhttps://www.noblechairs.com/epic-series/real-leather-gaming-chair
Price$599.99

It’s not quite as gracefully subtle as Noblechairs’ other chair, but if you don’t mind that, this is a stellar purchase. From the cross-thatched embroidery to the genuine leather of its namesake, if you want a no-compromises gaming chair, this is it. Oh, and it’s also ridiculously quick and easy to set up. The Epic Real Leather is also a joy to sit on, thanks to its high-density soft foam cushions. And once your chair is set up, it’s super easy to sit in – and you can sit any way that you like. For God’s sake, don’t just read the instructions. Real leather or genuine suede are options if you want to save money.

10. SecretLab Omega 2020

(Credit: SecretLab)
(Credit: SecretLab)
Key FeaturesPersonalized ergonomic support for every size
Adjustable lumbar support
Research-backed ergonomic features
Where to Buyhttps://secretlabchairs.com.au/collections/omega-series
Price$639

Don’t fancy the Titan, how about its less voluminous (funnily enough, slightly cheaper) sibling – the Omega. Its 2020 iteration, which inspires the same smooth, Mad Men-esque class, albeit using that oh-so-gaming sci-fi style, is simply gorgeous, especially if you go for the PU leather or rich Napa leather versions. But the 2020 SecretLab Omega doesn’t only leverage looks, though: this beauty comes with two pillows – one for the head and one for the lumbar support – both memory foam, for even more support than its predecessor; not to mention the absolute increased build quality; the SecretLab Omega 2020, in fact, has way more sturdiness than the 2018 model, featuring a metal support for the armrests.

11. IKEA Markus

(Credit: IKEA)
(Credit: IKEA)
Key Features10 year guarantee
Adjustable and lockable tilt function
Pressure-sensitive brake mechanism
Where to Buyhttps://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/markus-office-chair-vissle-dark-grey-50261151/
Price$279

The IKEA Markus chair has been around for some time. It’s one of the better everyday ergonomic office chairs for the price, although even the ‘relatively cheap’ part of it will start racking up quite a toll on your wallet for those seats that are still in stock. The Markus is a very basic chair that offers you no more than what other cheap ergonomic office chairs do. This is its worst feature, but it does the job just fine and isn’t half-bad looking, either. It’s a firm seat with a comfortable upright sitting posture and an integrated headrest that goes the full length of the back. The back itself is made of a mesh cloth to give airflow and improve breathability.

12. Noblechairs Icon Gaming Chair

(Credit: Noblechairs)
(Credit: Noblechairs)
Key FeaturesPremium gaming seat
PU-imitation leather
Comfortable cold-foam upholstery
Where to Buyhttps://www.noblechairs.com/icon-series/gaming-chair-pu-leather
Price$429.99

The Icon – another masterpiece piece of craftsmanship from Noblechairs – comes with ergonomic design that you’ll like when you’re staring at your computer or gaming console for hours at a time. They also sit among the very best for value, for being lightweight and for being the easiest to move around. This is because the cool thing about their lumbar cushion is that you can just remove it if you find it to your liking. As for the appearance of the Noblechairs Icon, this is their least ostentatious design, one that you might find attractive if you take your computer to work and you want a chair that doesn’t scream ‘gaming’ and draw too much attention to itself.

13. Desky Pro+ Ergonomic Chair

(Credit: Desky)
(Credit: Desky)
Key FeaturesHeight-adjustable arms
Fabric seat
Instinctive Support
Where to Buyhttps://desky.com.au/products/desky-pro-ergonomic-chair
Price$599

Featured at the top of my review of the best ergonomic office chairs in Australia for 2022, the Desky Pro+ gives you premium ergonomic features in a design that looks, well, pretty darn good without costing over the top. If you have a budget of about $700, this is the comfiest office chair you will find. You won’t feel like you are sitting on the Desky Pro+, you’ll feel like you are a part of it. This ergonomic office chair can adjust the seat height, synchro tilt, back angle, backrest tilt, tilt lock and arm height.

14. Humanscale Liberty

Key FeaturesMinimal aesthetic
Automatic, weight-sensitive recline
Innovative tri-panel mesh backrest
Where to Buyhttps://www.humanscale.com/products/seating/liberty-task-office-chair
Price$1231

Humanscale Libery, a chair without any fancy features. Photo by Joseph Sohm/age fotostockThe Humanscale Liberty is a simple mesh office chair with a clean aesthetic, ergonomic sitting stance, and only three manual adjustments – seat height, seat depth, and armrest height. It’s a classic look that was first conceived by its designer, the late Niels Diffrient. All other adjustments are handled by a weight-sensing cantilever system, meaning your bodyweight is doing all the work. A company can build a great office chair and not have it be nearly as popular as the Humanscale Liberty. The Liberty chair is manufactured in the United States of injection-moulded plastic and high-grade aluminium, which are not the typical ingredients found in workplace seats.

15. Elite Furniture X-Ergo

(Credit: Elite Furniture)
Key FeaturesAdjustable Lumbar
BIFMA Tested
Optional Adjustable Headrest
Where to Buyhttps://www.eliteofficefurniture.com.au/products/ergo1-range
Price$907

My best value non-mesh all-round office chair for those with stronger budgets is the Elite X-Ergo, a premium all-mesh office chair that is surprisingly affordable. In terms of specs and price the Elite X-Ergo is not too dissimilar from my overall winner of the best home office chair in Australia: the Desky Pro+. You either like a design of all-mesh office chairs as much as I do, or you don’t. I find them to be both the lightest and most comfortable home office chairs, but they tend to be no-laires – meaning that if you have sat on an all-mesh chair before and liked the feeling of weightlessness, they’re a no-brainer. If, however, you have never sat in an all-mesh chair, there is a 20 per cent chance you will dislike them to the point of never being able to sit on another one again (the writers at Medium.com wrote a great story about people’s reactions to the Aeron in the 1990s, and it still holds today) – in which case, buying an all-mesh office chair online, sight unseen, is a cat-and-mouse game, which you might either win or lose.

16. Herman Miller Cosm Mid-Back

(Credit: Herman Miller)
(Credit: Herman Miller)
Key FeaturesCosm’s Auto-Harmonic Tilt
Intercept suspension and flexible frame
Auto-Harmonic Tilt
Where to Buyhttps://www.hermanmiller.com/en_au/products/seating/office-chairs/cosm-chairs/
Price$1,840

So, yes: the Cosm is pretty much the best-looking chair in the world. It’s also imbued with a level of functionality that goes beyond mere aesthetics. This is a chair that you’ll continue to happily sit in long after your boss’s back has worn through hers. There are three height options for the Cosm – high, medium and low back. The mid-back is large enough to cocoon the contours of your back, but not so large that it ruins the chair’s clean, simple lines. This is furniture that carries an aesthetic imperative masked as an office chair.

17. UpDown Bandit Chair

(Credit: UpDown Desk)
(Credit: UpDown Desk)
Key FeaturesFully adjustable
Exceed Australian & International Standards
Highest levels of strength and durability testing
Where to Buyhttps://updowndesk.com.au/products/updown-desk-pro-bandit-chair
Price$394

It doesn’t have to be hard to pick the best budget office chair. When you’re on a budget, look for the most high-end features in the cheapest goods. The Bandit is one of these. The Bandit has adjustable tilt tension and angle, as well as height adjustment, plus lumbar support: perfect for growing kids about to go to school! It really is a bare-metal, no-fuss and good-damn office chair trying to be nothing but that. I’ve never before, and likely will never again, see such a strange device that will make such a strange houseware impression. It’s an odd, charming old thing when viewed from the front.

18. Steelcase Leap V2

(Credit: Steelcase)
(Credit: Steelcase)
Key FeaturesLiveBack(TM) technology
Fully Adjustable Arms
Premium Seat Comfort
Where to Buyhttps://au.steelcase.com/products/steelcase-leap?variant=35674840105113
Price$1,366

The most successful of these is Leap V2, a line of fabric task chairs built by the 105-year-old company Steelcase. Its commitment to ergonomic chairs is singular in its vision for the long-term: adjustable, self-supporting, self-repairing. It is, not surprisingly, also the most expensive ergonomic chairs. If you were researching the most comfortable office chairs and didn’t come across this weight-activated model, you’ve done a poor job of your homework. Here is a chair capable of tweaking every setting available for optimal comfort: you can adjust the backrest tilt angle and tension; the height of the lumbar, along with the firmness of its lower back section; the angle to the seat, its depth, and its height, too.

19. MIUZ Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair Gaming

(Credit: Amazon)
(Credit: Amazon)
Key FeaturesErgonomic S-curve design
Fully adjustable headrest
360° swivel seat
Where to Buyhttps://www.amazon.com.au/MIUZ-Ergonomic-Office-Executive-Headrest/dp/B08LSHD2XX?th=1
Price$259

If we had to pick one office chair to beat all others, it’s the MIUZ Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair Gaming. This is the most comfortable, adjustable, and ergonomically superior office chair on our list. The chair features an adjustable curved headrest, two-way lumbar, and fully adjustable armrests. The backrest flips from 90 to 120 degrees and features four distinct reclining angles so you can adjust it to your liking. Overall, the chair boasts features that are otherwise found in the most expensive pieces of office furniture alone. Sliding the armrests left or right adjusts their position, but the killer feature is the ability to customise your head and neck support. This speaks to the quality of handiwork that went into this magnificent office chair.

20. Ekkio Executive Office Chair

Key FeaturesWide and tall S-shaped backrest design

Where to Buyhttps://www.amazon.com.au/Ekkio-Executive-Office-Chair-Skin-Friendly/dp/B09J4NQRFD
Price$206.95

Stylish, comfortable. Useful. Ekkio Executive Office Chair. The bright blue cushion that sits on the back and the armrests is a harsh contrast with the black and silver finish used for the rest of the office chair. A mix of mesh and high-density foam give a snuggy yet breathable support for the backrest. The height of the chair is adjustable to suit different body types, and lumbar support is adjustable – for side-to-side and height adjustment, so you no longer need a separate lumbar support cushion. For the utmost comfort, there is a mesh headrest.

Where to Buyhttps://www.desertcart.com.au/products/47962139-cherry-tree-furniture-executive-recline-extra-padded-office-chair-black-pu
Price$589

The Cherry Tree Furniture Executive Office Chair is sure to please the customers, because it’s comfortable, easy to put together, affordable, and it’s built to last. The price is right, but don’t for a moment think that it isn’t a tough chair, because it is. You won’t get all of the same super-duper high-tech materials and features found on some of the more expensive chairs, like those with Kineses Geoform Techno-Adaptive Laminated Celluloid-Carbon composite seats, but then again, you don’t need it. It’s just as comfortable to sit in, and it’s just as good for your posture. It has a polyurethane leather covering, a mesh back for improved ventilation, and it’s perfect for sinking into at the beginning of a work session. It’ll keep you comfortable as you work, play, straighten out the world, or whatever else you like to do.

26. Herman Miller Mirra 2

(Credit: Herman Miller)
Key FeaturesFlexible TriFlex back
Ultra-responsive Butterfly back
Immediate comfort and personalised ergonomics
Where to Buyhttps://www.hermanmiller.com/en_au/products/seating/office-chairs/mirra-2-chairs/
Price$1,345

For the money, you won’t do much better than the Herman Miller Mirra 2. The adjustment options are great, the comfort is good, the lumbar support is good, and the back is toasty. The negatives: it comes at the price of not having arms (or much else), so it’s not a great chair for people who like to lean back more than six degrees forward of their sitting height. The Mirra was better the second time around. One of the members of the T3 team bought a Mirra v1 15 years ago, after a back surgeon told them ‘you’ll be in pain the rest of your life’ unless they sat in a good, bouncy chair. Fifteen years later, they’re still sitting in that chair. It allowed them to return to work much earlier than anticipated; two youngsters and two dogs haven’t spoiled the furniture as much as that would suggest; and that bouncing has mostly kept their lower back from wreck and ruin.

27. Amazon Basic Office Chair

(Credit: Amazon)
(Credit: Amazon)
Key FeaturesModern profile and sophisticated appearance
Smooth contours and adjustable settings

Price$97.28

The Amazon Basics Office Chair lacks a lot of the bells and whistles, nicest materials, and best ergonomic options of the chairs on this list, but it’s an all-around solid office chair that also happens to be extremely inexpensive and looks clean and professional. ‘Overall, however, considering how inexpensive these stools are and the quality of material used, they’re worth every penny. In fact, if you were to buy 10 of these frames for the price of our best office and work chair choice, it makes the price of that chair seem like a legitimate value proposition. So, you need to furnish an entire start-up office space? You’re covered with the Amazon Basics Office Chair.’
